Organelle Traits

Understand Pathogenic organelle traits: conditional stat boosts, placement rules, tag synergies, and trait planning in the Tab editor.

Traits Versus Flat Stats

Organelle traits are the headline progression layer added for Pathogenic 1.0. Instead of every loot drop offering a simple plus-damage number, many parts now carry conditional boosts: activate when adjacent to Mitochondria, while Overcharge is above fifty percent, when three Spikes touch the same Pseudopod node, or after killing an elite within five seconds.

Traits reward spatial planning in the Tab editor. A Secretor with a trait that buffs ballistic neighbors wants Flagella on shared edges; a Spike with on-kill speed wants placement near high-traffic kill zones in cramped rooms. Ignoring traits still works on low Antibiotics, but mid and high tiers assume you read trait text and rotate parts until conditions stay true during combat.

Traits appear on loot, shop stock, and mutation altar offers. Rarity colors follow organelle conventions—do not sell purple trait carriers before reading conditions, even if base weapon stats look weak.

Placement and Synergy Planning

Open the editor after every major loot spike, not only when slots are full. Dragging one Mitochondria one hex can flip multiple trait lines green simultaneously. Use peripheral slots for movement Flagella so core clusters stay dense for adjacency bonuses.

Tag synergies matter: explosive Secretors pair with traits that proc on blast damage, minion traits stack with Mitotic Nidus organelles introduced at launch, and armor traits on Nanobot grids often require rectangular layouts impossible on Amoeba blobs—pathogen choice is trait choice.

When traits conflict—one wants melee adjacency while another wants empty neighbors—pick the condition you can maintain during boss phases. Heart and Lungs fights move your soft body constantly; static adjacency traits that work in Skin shops may drop offline during Lung airflow pushes.

Traits in Dailies, Challenges, and Co-op

Daily seeds with forced pathogen layouts can invalidate trait plans you use in standard runs. Re-read trait conditions when dailies assign Nanobot or Virus—grid constraints change which traits stay active.

Phagocytosis challenge mode removes ranged traits tied to Secretors; Photosynthesis shifts value toward economy and minion traits. Our challenge modes guide lists which trait families stay relevant under each mutator.

In co-op Diatom, only the host editor layout affects shared combat bodies per launch build—communicate trait-dependent positions before boss attempts so partners do not accidentally break adjacency by repositioning during split loot phases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can traits roll on any organelle?

Most weapon and utility organelles can carry traits. Some pathogen-specific parts have fixed trait lines that cannot reroll at the mutation altar.

Do traits persist between runs?

No. Like other organelles, traits reset each attempt. Plasmids and blueprints affect which traits appear in loot pools over time.

Where is the traits reference page?

See our organelles traits catalog at /organelles/traits/ for category breakdowns alongside this mechanics guide.
