Save and Continue
How Pathogenic mid-run save works: exit to menu, continue later, co-op interruptions, and what persists between sessions.
How Mid-Run Saving Works
Pathogenic added mid-run exit in biweekly updates leading to the July 2026 launch. You can leave an active invasion, return to the main menu or desktop, and resume later from the CONTINUE button on the title screen. The feature targets longer Heart pushes, co-op Diatom sessions, and players who need real-life breaks without abandoning plasmid fragment progress.
Saved state includes your current organelle layout, map progress, currency, Antibiotics tier, active challenge mode, and pathogen selection. It does not create a separate save slot library—only the most recent interrupted run continues. Starting a new run overwrites the suspended session after confirmation.
Saving is not available during active boss phase transitions or certain event rooms in some patches. Wait for room clear rewards before exiting to avoid rollback to the previous node.
Best Practices for CONTINUE
Pause between organs rather than mid-combat when possible. Exiting during macrophage swarms can reload into awkward spawn positions depending on patch behavior. Open the map with M, confirm the next route, then exit from the pause menu if you need hours away from the run.
Co-op Diatom hosts should sync with partners before saving—guests disconnected during save may need a fresh Remote Play invite on continue. Hosts carry the save file; guests rejoin through Steam, not a separate cloud slot.
Daily challenge seeds and leaderboard attempts generally should not rely on save scumming unless the daily card explicitly allows replays within the same seed. Standard progression runs and story clears benefit most from CONTINUE.
What Save Does Not Preserve
Metagame unlocks already banked to plasmid trees persist regardless of save. Organelles and in-run mutations remain tied to the suspended attempt only—dying after continue still loses that run loot except fragments already converted at run end.
Save-and-continue does not bypass permadeath within the run. It simply pauses. Challenge modes and Antibiotics modifiers active when you saved remain active when you load. Tooltips reworked in Update 4 apply to continued runs after patching—verify adjacency traits if a hotfix lands mid-run.
Pair this guide with remote play together and co-op Diatom pages when coordinating multiplayer breaks, and with map routing guides when planning where to pause before difficult elite chains.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have multiple saved runs?
No. Only one suspended run continues at a time. New runs overwrite after confirmation.
Does CONTINUE work after game updates?
Major patches may invalidate saves. Patch notes usually mention compatibility. Finish runs before updating when possible.
Can guests continue a Diatom save?
The host continues the save. Guests rejoin via Remote Play; they do not load independent copies.
